From 25- to 30-year-old vines on gravelly soils, the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Welles is one of the most exciting Sauvignons I have ever tasted from this stylish family domaine. “2011 was incredibly hot and ripe; we had so much power in the wine and it was difficult to decide when to pick,” says Katharina Tinnacher. The family dislikes overripeness and harvested in the last week of September. The 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Welles was fermented and aged on the full lees for four years in a 1,200-liter barrel, before it was bottled in May 2015. “Big volume wines need a long aging process,” says Katharina. The 2011 starts extremely deep and highly complex on the nose and offers concentrated yet fresh stone and lemon flavors, but also indicates a great purity and intensity. Full-bodied and super intense on the palate, but again also enormously fresh, piquant and pure, this is an impressive wine. It reveals an endless finish full of tension, grip and freshness. There is no alcohol bitterness, but lots of power and still room for nuances and finesse. This is a great and energetic Styrian Sauvignon with dried rosemary flavors in the aftertaste. Extraordinary!
The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Welles is sourced from a 24-year-old, south to east-facing vineyard on chalk-free, gravelly conglomerate soils. Fermented and aged for 18 months in traditional oak vats and bottled in May 2015, this 2013 offers a very clear, pure and precise, spicy rather than fruity nose with candied orange and lime peels, cumquat, flinty and stony notes. Powerful and intense, but also very straight and pure on the palate, this is a gorgeous blend of intense fruit flavors and salty minerals. This wine is very elegant and balanced, and at the same time, really piquant and provided with a very nice tannin grip. The finish is crisp and reveals gooseberry, lemon and lime flavors. This well-structured Sauvignon still needs a couple of years to unfold all its layers.
From vines planted on shell limestone in 1980 and 1985, the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Flamberg displays a coolish, fresh and herbal bouquet with notes of chamomile, grapefruit and lemon peels; it is pretty pure and concentrated. Full-bodied, rich, intense and with a nice grip, this is a zesty, piquant and very salty wine with concentrated Sauvignon aromas. This Sauvignon also possesses a biting grip and a very long, pretty powerful finish. Great aging potential. The wine was raised in traditional oak vats for 18 months on its lees.
