Katharina Tinnacher

PASSION SINCE 1770

Boutique winery Lackner Tinnacher is one of the oldest estates in Südsteiermark. The foundation for the wines unmistakable character was planted back in the 1920s through meticulous propagation of the estate`s own vine selections, with a focus on small, spicy grapes befitting the composition of the soil.

Still today, all grapes are sourced from the estate`s own vinyards and the philosophy remains firmly in place that the quality of a wine is dictated not in the cellar but rather in the vinyard – through organic work, hand craftsmanship and manual labor, individually for each vine and site.

Katharina Tinnacher assumed responsibility of the estate in 2013. In the cellar she pursues a timeless style inspired by the estate`s traditional wine culture. After meticulous grape selection, the fruit is gently pressed, with only the finest portion of the run vinified through 100% wild ferment. As befits the estate`s convictions, no fining or additives are used. The result: Wines that are perpetually individual, elegant, highly distinctive and well capable of aging.

LIVING VINEYARDS

Katharina Tinnacher transitioned her family’s estate to organic viticulture in 2013. The plants, trees, herbs, bees and microscopic life of her vineyards now thrive in symbiosis. Natural balance is achieved through diversity. Sheltering meadows and trees keep temperatures moderate even in high summer, meaning no need for extra irrigation of the vines. And should climate change bring increasingly hot weather, the vines are nevertheless poised to flourish.

In addition to the 27 hectares of vineyards personally owned by the family, the estate also encompasses an equal area dedicated to biodiversity. These spaces are planted with wildflower meadows, traditional orchards, and small forests – creating valuable habitats and enhancing the ecological balance of the entire estate.

WORKING WITH THE CYCLE OF THE SEASONS

Nature rests in winter, but we don’t. It is a time for pruning and binding the vines by hand to ensure their long-term health and vitality. The canopy is carefully shaped through several passes to allow for optimal sunlight and air circulation. During the active growth period, our focus is on maintaining the perfect balance of light and shade. The grapes receive equal attention in terms of warmth, protection, and ventilation, ensuring they ripen uniformly.
We work with compost to nourish the soil but deliberately avoid synthetic fertilizers. The natural yield of our vines ranges between 25 and 45 hectoliters per hectare, depending on the age of the vines and the vineyard site.
The harvest is done entirely by hand, with a meticulous selection process carried out directly in the vineyard. Only healthy grapes with perfect physiological ripeness and exceptional flavor are chosen to become wine.

ORGANIC WINEMAKING

Nature is smart. We follow her lead in producing elegant wines of fine minerality and complex structure. The butterfly on our bottles stands for the metamorphosis from fruit to wine, but also for the ecological balance that we seek to maintain. We use neither enhancements nor additives in our winemaking. The grapes are gently pressed, undergo spontaneous fermentation, experience a natural malolactic fermentation, and are aged for 8–30 months on fine lees as a natural and traditional method of wine production. Above all, ensuring stability and consistent quality is our top priority.

Charming, complex, profound, elegant, and food-friendly – our wines showcases the diversity of Südsteiermark. We cultivate exclusively white grape varieties that thrive in our distinctive alpine-Mediterranean climate. Abundant rainfall and pronounced temperature differences between day and night shape wines of remarkable elegance and individuality. Sauvignon Blanc forms the core of our vineyards, accounting for 55% of the total area. It is complemented by Morillon (Styrian Chardonnay), Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Gelber Muskateller.

THE SÜDSTEIERMARK

The intersecting influences of the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea shape the steep slopes and diverse soils of our vineyards. Marl, sandy soils, gravel conglomerates, and coral limestone are intricately woven together, creating a complex and varied terroir. Just as diverse as the soils are the growing conditions – and the grape varieties cultivated in this region.

Climatically, we are influenced by both the Alps and the Mediterranean, which bring humid warmth and gentle Mediterranean breezes. Frequent rainfall during the growing season, with annual precipitation totals of around 1000 mm, contributes to the pronounced acidity of the grapes, lending the wines their elegance. During the day, direct sunlight on the steep vineyards promotes optimal vine growth, while cooler nighttime temperatures and refreshing winds enhance the distinct fruity and spicy aromas of the grapes.

Our wines reflect their origin – each bottle carries the name of the wine village or a specific vineyard site. In Austria, exceptional single-vineyard wines are marked with the designation “Ried,” a symbol of character, and a deep connection to place.

GAMLITZ

Warm, sheltered vineyards in the village of Gamlitz, with sandy and gravelly soils, encourage exceptionally ripe fruit. The wines that grow here are distinguished by fine fruit aromas, a juicy texture, and well-balanced acidity on the palate.

GAMLITZ Gelber Muskateller 2024

GAMLITZ Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Our hometown of Gamlitz is located in the heart of southern Styria. Here, the vines grow at elevations between 320 and 550 meters in warm, sheltered vineyard sites. The geological foundation of the mostly lime-free, well-draining soils consists of sands rich in the minerals quartz and mica. The Steinbach and Kranach valleys are two prominent cuts through the hilly landscape. They influence the vineyards’ microclimate and intensify the temperature differences between day and night.
Ried ECKBERG

Vines of the Pinot family thrive on these clayey marl soils to reveal charming and food-friendly wines of delicate fruit and silken body.

Ried ECKBERG Weissburgunder 2023

The Eckberg vineyard is a steep, east-facing slope situated at 400 to 450 meters above sea level. In the early morning hours, its easterly exposure allows the vines to soak up the first rays of sunlight. The marl soil, rich in nutrients, works in harmony with the sun to impart remarkable vitality to the vines. Planted in the 1970s and 1990s with Weissburgunder and Morillon (the traditional Styrian name for Chardonnay) the vineyard yields charming wines with delicate fruit, refined finesse, and a wonderfully inviting drinkability.
Ried STEINBACH KOGEL

Pinot Blanc has a long-standing tradition in Südsteiermark. Known for its subtlety and noble restraint among the Burgundian varietals, it is particularly elegant and refined when grown in the Steinbach Kogel vineyard. This crystalline, delicately smoky Pinot Blanc captivates with its finesse and great aging potential.

Ried STEINBACH KOGEL Weissburgunder  2023

„Kogel“ is the traditional term for the top of a hill. At the highest point of the Steinbach vineyard, the Pinot Blanc vines grow at an elevation of 450-470 meters. The gravel soil and warm microclimate of the steep, west-facing slope create the perfect conditions for the grapes to ripen to perfection.
Ried STEINBACH

Wines from Steinbach are distinguished by their elegance and precision. Marked by finely chiseled fruit, delicate minerality, and a lively, balanced structure.

Ried STEINBACH Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Ried STEINBACH Morillon 2023

Rising between 400 and 470 meters above sea level, the oldest vineyards around our estate unfold along steep, sun-kissed slopes facing south to southwest. The soils here reveal a tapestry of geological diversity. Sand, gravel and crushed stone soils are all present in close proximity, providing perfect conditions for taut, thrilling wines.
Ried FLAMBERG

The special terroir is part cool microclimate, part ancient limestone soil formed 15 million years ago from the primordial sea. Its stamp gives the nuanced, mineral-shaped wines of the Ried Flamberg an engaging, one-of-a-kind character.

RIED FLAMBERG Morillon 2022

Flamberg is one of the most fascinating vineyards in southern Styria. It rests on a massive coral limestone reef that formed in a primordial sea around 15 million years ago; numerous fossilized shells can also be found in the topsoil. The site rises from 400 to 450 meters above sea level and drops steeply to the west. Fresh winds from the nearby Koralpe mountain range create a cool microclimate. This allows us to harvest late into the autumn without reaching excessive ripeness, preserving the wines’ freshness and elegance.
Ried WELLES

Held by the family since 1937, this vineyard is our grandest treasure. Sauvignon Blanc vines thrive on this steep, exposed site, where the barren gravel conglomerate soil produces distinctive wines with exceptional aging potential.

Ried WELLES Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Ried WELLES Sauvignon Blanc 2013

This is the highest vineyard in the estate’s portfolio, reaching up to 515 meters above sea level. Positioned above the fog line and exposed to strong winds, the vines and grapes remain naturally healthy. The barren gravel conglomerate of alpine origin forces the roots to dig deep. The berries are small, spicy, and aromatic. This demanding slope gives rise to wines of tremendous cellarability.

What others say about us
